The Foundations of Early Modern Europe 1460-1559 (The Norton History of Modern Europe)
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (February, 1994)
Average review score:

Succinct yet insightful, scholarly yet readable. A classic.Rice's work is a superb short survey of the technology and ideas that created our modern world. Despite the high level of scholarship, the text is eminently readable with a graceful, lucid style that successfully walks the tightrope of summarizing without oversimplifying. The chapter on the impact of the invention of printing is alone worth the price of the book. Excellent illustrations and maps throughout, and the typeface is exquisite. I read this book twenty years ago for a college history course and recently reread it in the second edition. An unparalleled account of the early modern period and undoubtedly on its way to becoming a modern classic.

Four long days : return to Attica, September 9-13, 1971 : story
Published in Unknown Binding by American Life Associates ()
Average review score:

A riveting account of a true storyThis book is a real page turner. Author Anthony Strollo writes of his experience on the hostage rescue team during the Attica prison riot, which resulted in the death of about 40 hostages and prisoners. Strollo's main goal is to get his brother Frank, who was one of the hostages, out alive. He keeps the reader in suspense right up until the last moment.

The Fragile Peace
Published in Hardcover by Paul & Co Pub Consortium (July, 1996)
Average review score:

A compulsive page turner. Storytelling does not come better.Do you really like to read? Do you enjoy a good story? Are you fed up with obvious endings? Give yourself a treat, read this. There are weaknesses in the text but not in the underlying themes or the gripping narrative. This is a film script in waiting, you can see it on the screen as you read, you can visualise the events as they happen. Buy it, read it, wait for the next book and buy that! There is a level of naievty to this author but that give you a freshness that is truly refreshing.

The Framing of a Thought
Published in Paperback by Dorrance Publishing Co (November, 1997)
Average review score:

This is a dynamic piece of art.Seldom does one come across a work which encompasses so many aspects of life. Morris Johnson's analysis of friendship, love and sorrow is quite eyeopening. Though his talent for writing is evident, it is the realness of his art which makes this book so tangible. It is noted Mr. Johnson has since passed away, but his words will resonate with many for years to come.

France and the Cult of the Sacred Heart: An Epic Tale for Modern Times (Studies on the History of Society and Culture)
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (04 September, 2000)
Average review score:

Well-written, fascinating book! This is a thoughtful, intelligent, and well-researched book which should be required reading for anyone interested in the fascinating history of French Catholicism. There is much here for professional historians, interested amateurs, and anyone who has ever climbed the hill of Montmartre and pondered the immense church at its summit. Jonas, author of _Industry and Politics in Rural France: Peasants of the Isère, 1870-1914_, convincingly explores the history of the Sacred Heart devotion, the national feelings of guilt after the Franco-Prussian War, and elaborates upon an important aspect of the conservative politics of modern France. The work nicely complements the works of Ruth Harris, Thomas Kselman, Timothy Tackett, and Dale Van Kley. I recommend it very highly.

Frank Lloyd Wright: Europe and Beyond (An Ahmanson Murphy Fine Arts Book)
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (October, 1999)
Average review score:

The Frank Lloyd Wright you don't know aboutThis book provides a new perspective on Wright -- who knew he designed a civic and arts complex for Baghdad, Iraq (it was never built)? Or that Fallingwater influenced the design of a wealthy suburb of Mexico City (El Pedregal)? If you think you're tired of Wright and all the Prairie Style images associated with him, read this book and get a fresh take.

Frege: An Introduction to the Founder of Modern Analytic Philosophy
Published in Hardcover by Blackwell Publishers (August, 2000)
Average review score:

A ClassicThis book is the best introduction to the development of Frege's thought that I've read. Kenny covers each major work of Frege in detail with clear explanations of the argument and purpose of each work. There is a brief biographical sketch in the beginning and the book finishes with a summary of Frege's achievements.
